Descend the 105 steps from the almost hidden cave entrance to the landing stage of an underground canal where you step on to your tour guides’ boat.

From here you glide quietly through the workings of a 200 year old lead mine.

The Midland Railway, Derbyshire

The Midland Railway, Butterley is the home for all the things related to the Midland Railway. There is a standard Gauge line which has steam and diesel hauled passenger trains. The main site at Swanwick has a museum devoted to the Midland Railway as well as a large collection of steam and diesel locomotives. It is a day out for the whole family with model and miniature railways, a farm and a country park as well as a host of other attractions.

Located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, Carsington Water has everything you need for an enjoyable day out – open every day of the year except Christmas Day.

Carsington Water is a local centre for outdoor activities – there is a sailing club active next door to the Visitor Centre, and there are many opportunities for walking and cycling around the reservoir and the surrounding villages. Cycle hire is available and there is plentiful car parking. For young children there is a children’s playground near the visitor centre.

Carsington Water is open seven days a week from 10.00am (closing times vary-please check) Closed Christmas Day.

Shipley Country Park

The Shipley Estate is an ancient manor mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), when it was recorded as belonging to Gilbert of Ghent, the nephew of William the Conqueror. Records dating from the 14th century show that the land was used as a sporting estate with a hunting lodge on Shipley Hill and the area was prized for its extensive forest and excellent hunting.

National Stone Centre, Derbyshire

The National Stone Centre site contains six former quarries, four lime kilns and over one hundred and twenty disused lead mine shafts.

The National Stone Centre site covers 50 acres (20 Ha), about half of which is designated nationally as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its geological features. Almost all the site is of limestone deposited in Carboniferous times 330 million years ago.
