BUXTON in Derbyshire Probably dating from as far back as the Mesolithic period (over 5,000 years before Christ) right through the Bronze Ages and Roman occupation of Britain, Buxton, part of the High Peak district in Derbyshire has had settlements for at least 7,000 years! "waters of the sacred grove" The Romans built three bath houses in Buxton and named the town (Latin) Aquae Arnemetiae which translates to "waters of the sacred grove". This was recorded in document form as far back as the 7th Century by an unknown Monk at the Italian Monastery at Ravenna - the Ravenna Cosmography, a compiled list of all the towns, rivers and roads in the Roman Empire.Featured Services
