On the road between Buxton and Macclesfield lies the Cat and Fiddle Inn. Lending it’s name to the A537 dubbed “the most dangerous road in Britain”, the alehouse is popular with tourists and in particular motorcyclists who pilgrimage to the Peak District to enjoy the beautiful surroundings whilst they navigating the twisty bends, long straights and sometimes hazardous road conditions, depending on diesel spills, recent crash’s, stray sheep or of course the ever changing weather.
Best motorcycling road in England, but worst death trap for motorcyclists
The AA reported in 2003 that 35 major crashes on eight miles of the A537 occurred between 1999 and 2001. Between 2001 to 2008, it was reported that 43 ‘fatal’ or serious collisions of which nearly three-quarters involved motorcyclists.
In 2006, it was listed in the top ten of Britain’s ‘bendiest’ roads and has been dubbed “the most dangerous road in Britain”.
As well as the A537, the A54 between Congleton and Buxton, the A6 between Derby and Buxton, and the A515 from Lichfield to Buxton made the list of most dangerous bike routes.
From February / March 2010, the A537 is to be monitored with average speed cameras.
