18 year old McElderry beat Olly Murs in a public vote on the ITV talent show to be signed up for a recording contract worth £1million pounds.

This year’s X Factor is expected to be extremely lucrative for ITV1. The series has dominated peaktime viewing on both Saturday and Sunday throughout the autumn.

The 40 ITV1 shows are thought to have brought in more than £75m in advertising, plus revenue from the phone-votes.

Simon Cowell's X Factor has played a major role in ITV's resurgence

And one analyst claims the total benefit to ITV is almost £100m, including income from showings on its website itv.com and the ITV2 spin-off show.

MySpace has launched a UK version of MySpace Music in a bid to compete directly with streaming sites like Spotify and Last Fm.

The site, which helped launch the careers of Lily Allen and Kate Nash, claims it has “the most comprehensive catalogue” on the internet.

Teaming up with Apple iTunes it will enable DRM-free downloading.

It will offer free streaming access to entire back catalogues of artists on both major and independent labels.

MySpace Music, which has 13 million UK accounts, is known as a platform for up-and-coming bands.

Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Courtney Holt, president of MySpace Music, described the new look MySpace as a “social music discovery service”.

“We provide streaming audio, video, a comprehensive suite of artist tools, original content and programming all wrapped up together in one nice package,” he explained.

Like Spotify, occasional adverts will appear on-screen, but unlike the other free service, the adverts will not interrupt the music which is being streamed.
Kasabian played an intimate gig in London on 2 December to mark the launch of the site
Holt explained why it has taken some time for the innovations to take place: “Part of it was the need to evolve the tools and we’ve done a really good job at that, creating a great user experience.”

Kasabian played an intimate gig in London on 2 December to mark the launch of the site, which is run by a subsidiary of News Corporation after its owner was bought out in 2005 for more than £300m.

Artists will be able to publish playlists to so fans and friends can see what is influencing them. Celebrities Britney Spears, Lady GaGa, Katie Price and even the Vatican have offered up their playlists.

Holt has high hopes for MySpace Music in the UK, adding: “MySpace Music is the number one music site in America and since we have launched in Australia and New Zealand we have seen double the engagement than pre, so we believe this is going to be great for MySpace in the UK.”

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be filmed in 3D for the first time, it has been announced.

Up to 25 of the games will be captured using 3D cameras, football’s governing body Fifa said.

Although it has no definite plans to broadcast the matches live in 3D, Fifa said it was a possibility and would be decided in “the coming months”.

Initially, it said, footage will also be shown at public events in seven cities around the world.

The footage will also be packaged into a film.

Sony technology will be used to film the games, although the firm has not confirmed details of the specific technology it will use.

Sporting firsts

The majority of existing 3D set-ups use two-camera systems to record images tailored specifically for the left and right eye of the viewer.

Special polarised glasses are then used to view the image.

However, earlier this year, the Japanese firm unveiled a single-lens camera, which it said was especially suited for sporting events.

The camera takes a single image that is split by mirrors and recorded on two sensors.

3D technology has been used to capture special events before, such as the Queen’s Coronation.

However, regular and widespread use of the technology is still in its infancy.

Now, analysts believe the technology is on the cusp of becoming mainstream and believe the World Cup could play an important role in take-up of the technology.

“Global sporting events… are very important drivers of new technology, particularly in the TV market”, said Tom Morrod, Senior Analyst at Screen Digest.

The firm predicts there may be 13.6m 3D TV sets installed in Europe by 2013.

In 2008, the BBC broadcast the world’s first live sporting event in 3D, beaming back an England vs. Scotland game from the Six Nations to a cinema in London.

The corporation’s director of London 2012, Roger Mosey, has said there are also plans to capture some of the Olympics in 3D.

In July this year, broadcaster Sky said that it would launch “the UK’s first 3D channel” by 2010.

It has also hinted that it may launch a sports channel which could include Premier League Football in 3D.

The World Cup begins on the 11 June 2010.

Recently there has been an increase in the sharp practice of Mobile Disco’s using various accreditations as a means to market themselves and their business.

Often this is an act of laziness on the part of the Disco Business. Its a sad fact that a lot of mobile disco operators are simply unable / unwilling to write a half decent write up of their own business services or promote themselves on their own websites, or be detailed in their replies to client enquiries and instead prefer to pay a small sum of money in order to join an entity whose link or banner may infer some kind of professional recommendation or that a business level vetting / quality process has in some way being carried out and negate the need to work on the self promotion.

Sadly these ‘approved by’ and ‘Recommended by’ statements may be correct in that the business is a member of that particular entity however on some occasions these statements of fact may be used on websites and in brochures (along with the above text samples) in a manner that confuses, misleads or otherwise convey some kind of personal recommendation is given by issuing entity or that the mobile disco has in some way been personally vetted by the association or entity who is mentioned. Which is often found to be incorrect and potentially misleading

More often than not, the entity who is offering these ‘Recommended by’ or ‘Accredited by’ links and banners and who by their silence are actively condoning these practices have not even met the person running the business, let alone have taken the time to fully examine their business practices, and generally assessed their overall merits based on their quality of work and reliability across a whole varied genre of bookings and audiences.

CLIENTS BEWARE!

If you are a client reading this, then I strongly suggest that if you come across a Mobile Disco business who is using these accreditations in a manner which perhaps confused you into thinking that it was some personal guarantee of their reliability, to contact the entity that they are a member of and ask them exactly what safeguards they have in place should the business you book prove to be unreliable or operate unsatisfactory and can they back up this website recommendation with a full written assurance of the facts. You should also ask them to provide details of their underwriting insurers and complaints procedure should you need to claim for compensation or lodge a complaint due to the fact you may have booked that particular entertainer partly or solely on the strength of their affiliation / recommendation statements and ultimately have been disappointed with some aspect of the provided service.

The plain and simple fact of the matter is that often these ‘recommended by’ links mean absolutely nothing and in a lot of cases there is no logistical possibility that an association / entity can check hundreds of mobile disco businesses, which may be dotted about hundreds of miles from their own base, and most simply don’t bother because they don’t have the resources to do this once, let alone on an ongoing basis. How exactly can an association recommend a business they have never seen, and give personal recommendations on a DJ that they have never personally met? – in short they can’t.

All that is required to join most of these entities is a small membership fee! and perhaps the provision of insurance or electrical safety certificates.

NO ACTUAL ASSESSMENTS OF THE BUSINESS

NO ONGOING QUALITY ASSESSMENT

NO ACTUAL GUARANTEE THAT THIS PARTICULAR DJ IS ANY BETTER AT PROVIDING ENTERTAINMENT THAN THE NEXT

Our advice to you, is avoid booking any mobile disco who is using these affiliations in a manner which infers some kind of personal level recommendation, and instead book a DJ who is happy to spend time answering your questions in depth, responding to your enquiry in a timely and courteous manner and who puts in the required effort into selling their services to you on the basis of how good their are, and their strengths as an entertainer, rather than who they have just sent a cheque too.

If you are a DJ who is thinking of using these practices to promote yourself then we advise that you spend more time perhaps designing your website and literature around your own personality as a DJ and market the services that you provide, rather than hiding behind commercially paid for memberships which, you know yourself, have simply been bought rather than earned!.

There is of course nothing wrong with stating that you a member of an association or being proud to be part of a group or community and stating the fact that you are a member on your website, but inserting words or other text which perhaps infer to a potential client, that you are actually being recommended by the association / entity, is just plain misleading, and its only a matter of time before you, or the ‘recommending’ entity are actually asked to prove it
